New Delhi, Dec 6 (PTI) Jaguar Overseas, an Indianengineering, procurement and construction firm, has rolled outa USD 20-million solar power project in Afghanistan withsupport from the USAID and the Afghanistan government.

The 10-mega watt project will provide solar power to morethan a million customers of the Kandahar province, JaguarOverseas Ltd (JOL) said in a statement.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firmsaid it would be Afghanistan's first tariff-based solar powerplant.

"Officially launched in September this year inAfghanistan, it is the largest solar power project in thecountry, poised to support 1.15 million people residing in theKandahar province. The project is being developed by DynastyOil & Gas Private Ltd (DOGPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary ofJOL," the company said.

As part of the arrangement, JOL has signed a 15-yearpower purchase agreement with DABS, an independent andautonomous company established under The Corporations andLimited Liabilities Law of Afghanistan, entrusted withoperating and managing electric power generation, import,transmission, and distribution throughout Afghanistan on acommercial basis.

DABS will purchase power produced by JOL at a pre-definedrate for the next 15 years extendable up to 25 years, itadded.

Deepak Mathur, CEO, JOL, said, "This can serve as a modelthat can be replicated in other parts of Afghanistan in yearsto come. The successful completion of this project will notonly help in the growth of Kandahar, but also provide animpetus for improving business climate through availability oflow-cost power in the region."
