New Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) The tech world may be gearing upfor using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning(ML) to enhance operations but cybercrooks are looking atleveraging the same technologies for data breaches, accordingto a report by security firm Symantec.

As per Symantec's 2018 Cyber security predictions, cybercriminals may use AI and ML to attack and explore victims'networks.

"No cyber security conversation today is complete withouta discussion about AI and ML. So far, these conversations havebeen focused on using these technologies as protection anddetection mechanisms. However, this could change in 2018,"Symantec Director - Product Management (Asia Pacific andJapan) Tarun Kaura warned.

Besides, cybercriminals would look at exploiting poorsecurity settings and management of IoT devices at consumers'homes.

Citing an example, Kaura said if sensors of these devicesare hijacked, attackers can feed audio, visual or other fakedinputs to make these devices do what they want rather thanwhat users expect them to do.

"Home users generally do not consider the cyber securityimplications of their home IoT devices, leaving defaultsettings and not vigilantly updating them like they do withtheir computers," he said.

The attackers could also look at expanding their reach byexploiting expensive connected home devices.

Smart TVs, smart toys and other smart appliances can runinto thousands of dollars and users are generally not aware ofthe threats to these devices, making them an attractivetarget for cyber criminals, Kaura said. PTI SRSBT.
