revenue deptNew Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) Lt Governor Anil Baijal hasdirected the revenue department of the Delhi government toexamine a complaint regarding reconstitution of a Waqf Boardand submit a report on the issue.

The move cames a week after a delegation of the BJP MLAs,led by Leader of Opposition Vijender Gupta, submitted amemorandum to the Lt Governor, alleging reconstitution of theDelhi Waqf Board by the AAP government by "violating" laiddown rules.

"The Lt Governor has desired that matter (regardingGupta's complaint) may be examined as per rules, and commentsbe submitted to this secretariat for his kind perusal throughproper channel," Anoop Thakur, private secretary to the LtGovernor, said in a written statement to the revenuesecretary.

On November 27, the BJP legislators had raised the issueof reconstitution of the Delhi Waqf Board by the AAPgovernment before Baijal and sought his intervention in thematter.

"The Delhi government is bent on reconstituting the WaqfBoard in utter violation of the Waqf Act 1995 and the Waqf(Amendment) Act of 2013, throwing moral propriety and ethicalconsiderations to the winds," Gupta had said in a statementafter meeting the Lt Governor.

He also charged that Amantullah Khan, the former chairmanof the Waqf Board, was being reappointed to the post.

Khan is facing cases of "criminal breach of trust" whichare being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation , hehad also alleged.

The Delhi Waqf Board comprises seven members, who electthe chairman. Khan was elected as a member of the board lastmonth.

The AAP MLA was the chairman of the Waqf Board for 6months last year.

He had resigned amid allegations of irregularities duringhis tenure and raids on the office of the board by the Anti-Corruption Branch in September last year. PTI BUN VITKJ.
