experiments endsNew Delhi, Dec 7 (PTI) A two-day training programme toensure that animals are not subjected to "unnecessarysuffering" during experiments performed on them concluded heretoday.

The programme was conducted by the Committee for thePurpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals(CPCSEA).

"A two-day training programme conducted by the CPCSEA toensure that animals are not subjected to unnecessary pains orsuffering before, during, or after experiments are performedon them, concluded today," an official statement said.

The CPCSEA is a statutory committee of the environmentministry and has been constituted under the Prevention ofCruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

There are 1,675 establishments or research institutionsregistered with the CPCSEA, which conduct experiments andresearch on various small and large animals.

The CPCSEA nominates its nominees in the InstitutionalAnimal Experimentation Committee (IAEC) of each establishmentand this programme was conducted to train these nominees.

The training programme was attended by 170 nominees ofthe CPCSEA from 25 states all over the country, including fromnorth-eastern states such as Assam, Sikkim and Tripura, whichwere not represented earlier.

Member Secretary CPCSEA and Deputy Secretary S GowriShankar suggested that all nominees of the CPCSEA are expectedto be more effective, productive, rational and well informedabout all the guidelines on 'experimentation on animals'. PTITDSKJ.
