Kolkata, Dec 17 (PTI) Mahindra MSTC Recycling, thecountry's first auto-shredding project, is on track and thefirst phase of the plant is likely to be complete in Februarynext year, a top official has said.

Mahindra MSTC Recycling, the joint venture betweenstate-run metal scrap trading firm MSTC and MahindraIntertrade Ltd, is likely to make the first phase of theproject — a collecting and dismantling unit — operational byFebruary 2018.

Despite policy uncertainty on recycling, we are goingahead with the project expecting the same would be in placesoon as there is a mounting pressure for pollution control,MSTC chairman and managing director B B Singh told PTI.

The Centre is yet to come out with a clear-cut vehiclescrapping policy.

The guidelines are in place for recycling but withoutthe policy there would be no compulsion on the vehicle ownerto send the car for dismantling.

The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 120crore.

Singh said they are expecting to operationalise theglobal standard collection and dismantling centre at Noida byFebruary 2018. It will come up on a seven-acre land andwould cost anywhere between Rs 30 and 40 crore.

"This is the most complex part of the project. Theshredding unit can come up without many hiccups. It could be aone-million-tonne capacity shredding unit," he said.

There are, however, a few operational issues theproject may face like lack of clarity on how and who will dothe deregistration of the vehicle before a certificate ofdestruction is issued by the company, he said. PTI BSMJMRMS.
