pesticidesYavatmal (Mah), Oct 13 (PTI) With several deaths dueto pesticide poisoning reported in the district, Yavatmalpolice in Maharashtra today registered a case against yetanother retailer for selling pesticides without a license.

An FIR was registered against the owner of VaibhavKrishi Kendra shop at Wadki in Ralegaon today, police said.

The owner didn't have the necessary license to sellthe pesticides, police said. The case was registered under thePesticides Act, 1974, on the complaint of the tehsilagriculture officer.

With this, the number of cases registered forunauthorised sale of pesticides has reached nine.

Meanwhile, five more farmers/farm workers sufferingfrom pesticide poisoning have been admitted to the GovernmentMedical College Hospital here, taking the number of suchpatients to 26.

The death toll in the district on account of poisoningduring spraying of pesticides on crops has reached 19.

According to the district officials, compensation ofRs 2 lakh each has been paid to the families of 15 deceasedfarmers. The rest would get the compensation after autopsyreports are received and the causes of death in those casesare ascertained.

With a sudden spurt in the number of deaths due topesticide poisoning in the Vidarbha region, the Maharashtragovernment had ordered a high-level inquiry earlier thismonth.

According to the inquiry report, wrong mixing ofpesticides and lack of protective gear such as hand-gloves andmasks while spraying are the main reasons for pesticidepoisoning. PTI CORKRK.
