New Delhi, Oct 17 (PTI) The NDMC today launched fromRohini its ambitious project to replace over two lakhconventional street lights with LED fixtures in the next ninemonths, a move that will save Rs 50 crore of the civic bodyannually.

Delhi BJP president and Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwariinaugurated the project in the presence of Mayor and areacouncillor Preety Agarwal here.

Tiwari said the project would not only save Rs 50 croreannually on part of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation(NDMC) but also make the street lights energy efficient.

He said this saving would help NDMC spend it on otherdevelopment works.

There are 2.05 lakh street lights in total in the NDMCarea. Contract has been awarded for 1.15 lakh light fixturesin its two of the bigger zones - Rohini and Narela, the mayorsaid.

The entire conventional lighting system, semi half-mastlights and lights in parks of North Delhi will be replacedwith LEDs.

Remaining 90,000 will be in the City, Civil Lines, SadarPaharganj and Karol Bagh zones, the NDMC said.

Besides energy saving, recurring maintenance charges ofaround Rs 24 crore being paid to discoms, Rs 7 crore for themaintenance of semi high mast lights and Rs 3 crore for theirreplacement fittings annually, would be saved as theconcessionaire will take care of it, it said.

The civic body had prescribed world class specificationsfor the lights to ensure quality.

Also, the LEDs will be fitted with sensors so that theygo on and off automatically as per requirements.

The entire LED lighting system will be watched through acentral control and monitoring centre so that timely repairsand replacements could be done. PTI KNDAQS.
