Pune, Oct 22 (PTI) The Defence Research andDevelopment Organisation (DRDO) Chairman S Christopher todaysaid necessary modifications have been made to the advancedversion of the indigenous Arjun Mark II main battle tank asrecommended by the Army.

The DRDO chairman expressed confidence that the tankwill be accepted by the Army.

The Army had asked for 93 improvements to the tankwhich includes the capability of firing the anti-tank LAHATmissile, laser protection suite and improved armouredprotection for the vehicle.

"We have done the modifications... it will go throughthe trials and there is a possibility that Arjun MK II (battletank) will be accepted by Army and two regiments have alreadyagreed to induct the tanks," said DRDO Chairman, while talkingto reporters here.

Christopher was here to inaugurate POINTS 21 Batch ofPost Induction Training School programme for newly inductedDRDO scientists at the Defence Institute of AdvancedTechnology here.

As per DRDO, Arjun Mark II can fire missiles, hasadvanced explosive reactive armour panels, mine plough,automatic target tracking, advanced land navigation system,digital control harness and advanced commander panoramic sightamong other features.

Arjun will have a better gun barrel with an equivalentfiring charge (strength of the barrel to sustain firing) of500 rounds against the T 72's 250 rounds.

The Chennai-based Combat Vehicle Research andDevelopment Establishment has designed the Mark II version ofMBT at its facility there. PTI SPKRMT.
