Chennai, Trichy triumph in Junior TN Throwball Championship

Chennai beat Kancheepuram in three sets to claim the girls’ title in the 11th Junior State Throwball Championship held at the Velammal Vidyalaya in Mel Ayanambakkam on Sunday. Riposting from a set down, Trichy prevailed over Kancheepuram to lift the boys’ crown.

The Chennai eves started off smoothly, winning the first set 15-13 before Kancheepuram restored parity, winning the second set 15-3. However, the Chennai team rallied back to annexe the game  and the title. Thiruvallur beat Karur 15-8, 16-14 to claim second place.

In the boys’ section, Trichy beat Kancheepuram 8-13, 15-8, 16-14 to clinch the title while Chennai thrashed Salem to emerge third.

MCC retain title

The MCC ‘B’ pair of Rushmi Chakravarthy and Rajeev Vijaykumar edged out Vandana Murali and Vijay Kannan of Gandhinagar ‘A’ in an exciting three-set match to retain the title of the UCAL-TNTA Mixed Doubles League-cum-Knockout Championship.

 In the first set, after trading breaks to be one-all, the MCC pair broke Vandana’s serve twice to win the set 6-2. In the second set, the Gandhinagar pair regrouped. In a tense ninth game, Rajeev was broken and Vijay  held serve and won the set 6-3. Drama unfolded in the third set as the MCC pair took an early lead and hung on to win the tie-break and match 7-4,.

Lakshmi Mahadevan, vice-president of TNTA, gave away the UCAL Rolling Trophy to the winner.
