The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has demanded a lion’s share of financial proceeds earned by the International Cricket Council (ICC), saying it was a “legitimate right issue”.
The BCCI has told the ICC it wants a greater share of profits because India generates about 75 per cent of the world body’s annual revenue.
At present, the 10 Test-playing nations get an equal share of the total proceeds with the ICC reserving an amount for the non-Test playing nations.
Following a discussion on the sidelines of an Indian Premier League (IPL) meeting in Singapore over the weekend, the BCCI has urged the English and Australian boards to ask for the same since they too contribute a major share of the ICC’s total revenue.
“It is nothing but a just and fair right that we are asking for. It is not muscle flexing, but only our legitimate right,” said BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel.
