Vijay CC emerge champs

CHENNAI: Abhinav Mukund’s unbeaten 63 enabled Vijay CC to beat Jolly Rovers by nine wickets to win the inaugural Take Solutions Ashok Kumbhat T20 trophy at the MA Chidambaram stadium here on Sunday. Set a target of 135, Vijay CC achieved the same without fuss in 14.1 overs.

Earlier, Jolly Rovers, opting to bat had a poor start losing Bharath Shankar and Kaushik Gandhi cheaply. But Murali Vijay and Robin Bist steadied the ship by adding 43 runs for the third wicket. Soon, Vijay went for an ambitious shot that could not clear the fence and the resultant skier was held on to safely by Vignesh, with Mohamed bagging the wicket.

Some disciplined bowling by Rahil Shah and Aswin Crist helped Vijay CC to have a check on Jolly Rovers run rate. Rahil Shah bowled wicket to wicket, was accurate and did not give the width for the Rovers batsman to play the shots. He foxed the aggressive Piyush Chawla to play a false shot straight into the hands of Aswin Crist at fine leg.

The Rovers leggie was done in by the flight of Rahil Shah. Vijay  CC bowlers managed to keep the pressure mounting and kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Rovers did not have a plan to set a target and were bundled out due to low-percentage shots.

Brief scores: Jolly Rovers 134/8 in 20 ovs (Vijay 24, Robin Bist 24; Aswin Crist 2/24, Vijay Shankar 2/28) lost to Vijay CC 137/1 in 14.1 ovs (Abhinav Mukund 63 no, Dinesh Karthik 45 n.o.)
