KINGSTON: Legspinner Yasir Shah took all the wickets as the West Indies slumped to 93-4 and trailed Pakistan by 28 runs in the second innings on the fourth day of the first test Monday.
Pakistan was all out for 407 at tea, giving the visitors a first-innings lead of 121. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq reached 5,000 test runs but ran out of partners just one short of his hundred.
In a key blow to the hosts, West Indies opener Kieran Powell was out for 49 in the penultimate over of the day, offering a gentle catch to Younis Khan at first slip off Shah, who finished with 4-33 from nine overs.
Devendra Bishoo and Vishaul Singh were the night watchmen.
Test newcomer Shimron Hetmyer threatened to rapidly reduce Pakistan's lead, striking two fours and a six before he was out for 20 after a brisk 50-run second wicket partnership in 10 overs with Powell. Hetmeyer looked confident in only his second test innings and his dismissal was unfortunate. The ball struck his pads and rolled onto the stumps.
Earlier, Misbah was left undefeated on 99. No. 11 batsman Mohammad Abbas, on debut, held out for more than 10 overs to support his skipper. Misbah moved from 68 to the cusp of his 11th test century, only for Abbas to be out leg before wicket to Roston Chase on 1.
The 42-year-old Misbah reached 5,000 test runs in 127 innings when he moved to 49 with a leg-side single shortly after lunch. He raised his bat in a low-key celebration as teammates applauded at Sabina Park.
His innings included a six off Chase on the last ball of the morning session, and two more sixes shortly before tea off Bishoo. Misbah survived a chance on 64 when he nicked Shannon Gabriel's delivery low to Powell in the slips. The fielder immediately indicated — correctly as it turned out — that the ball may not have carried.
Misbah, the first Pakistani to be stranded on 99, used up 223 balls.
Gabriel (3-92) and Alzarri Joseph (3-71) were West Indies' most successful bowlers.
Pakistan resumed after lunch on 322-5 before losing five wickets in the session, including that of wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed. He hit five fours and a six in his 70-ball knock before unsuccessfully trying to sweep against the legspin of Bishoo, with the ball going round the batsman's legs to knock out a stump. Sarfraz Ahmed and Misbah shared 88 for the sixth wicket.
Pakistan resumed the day on 201-4 — 85 runs behind — and scored 121 runs in the opening session, losing only Asad Shafiq for 22, caught behind off the bowling of Gabriel.
West Indies was out for 286 in its first innings with fast bowler Mohammad Amir returning career-best figures of 6-44.
