CHENNAI: Ravichandran Ashwin has come a long way since his breakthrough with Chennai Super Kings way back in 2008. While he’s had his ups and downs, as is the wont of any cricketer, 2016 was perhaps the year that confirmed his status as the premier spin bowler in the world. The ICC Cricketer of the Year and Test Player of the Year were just rewards for such a fruitful year.

According to his own admission, the Adelaide Test was his turning point. “After the last England test (a series which India lost 1-3), I took it for granted that I would start in Adelaide against Australia. But not getting selected was the kick up the backside that I needed. That’s when I started working on my game, and I’m happy my hard work has paid dividends, and these awards are just a reflection of that,” the Chennai lad said at an event here on Friday.

The world’s top-ranked all-rounder has not only improved his cricket by leaps and bounds, but his skills on the mic have also become top-notch. Measured and insightful, Ashwin feels he’s in one of the best phases of his career. “Definitely one of the best phases for me. Not the best, because the best times are yet to come. But I’m looking to learn every single day. I monitor my aggression from time to time, and hope to be able to carry on.”
