CHENNAI: Cricket has seen many a player don the flannel, but what people remember are exciting duels. The opener of the second edition of the India Cements Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday too will witness one that fans are waiting for.

That duel is between N Jagadeesan of Dindigul Dragons — last season’s player of the tournament — and Washington Sundar of Tuti Patriots, one among the stars of IPL 10.

“Such duels are important for sustaining interest, particularly in the slam-bang version of the game. Jagadeesan is good striker of ball, and we know that fans will look forward to a duel between him and Washington,” said Patriots coach JR Madanagopal.

Washington excelled for the Rising Pune Supergiant, and even opened the bowling attack for them. “Yes, we have the option of starting with him. He bowled brilliantly for Pune. He has subtle variations, good accuracy, and can extract good purchase. Plus, he does not give width to players. He can bowl at any period of the game. The wicket will decide when he bowls,” said Madanagopal, while adding that Anand Subramanium will be leading in place of Dinesh Karthik.

With Abhinav Mukund out on national duty and Dinesh Karthik rested due to injury, Patriots are in a dilemma as to who will open with Kaushik Gandhi. “Washington is a viable option, since he opens for his club. We have told him to be ready for the challenge,” said Madanagopal, insisting that his team had plans for all players, and not just Jagadeesan.

Washington stated that there was no pressure before the clash, and that he would play his natural game. “I learnt a lot of things during the IPL, but what I cherish most is sharing the dressing room with MS Dhoni and Steve Smith. Their shared their knowledge with me and it will come in handy. There is no pressure. If I continue here what I did in the IPL, I can perform much better.”

On the other hand, Jagadeesan said that he was not being complacent while preparing to face Washington. “He is a good bowler, and we will not take him lightly. I am aware that expectations will be high after last season. I just want to go and express myself.”

Dragons coach M Venkataramana remarked that his team was prepared for the Patriots’ bowling attack. “Our team is ready to face anyone. Yes, duels will be interesting and I am sure that Jagadeesan will be the marked man. But he is well-prepared.”
