RIO DE JANEIRO: A late volley from former Argentina international striker Hernan Barcos gave Cruzeiro a 2-1 victory over Atletico Paranaense in Brazil's Serie A football championship.

Barcos timed his run at the far post to perfection, latching onto a sumptuous cross from Robinho to lash a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Aderbar Santos on Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency.

Guilherme had given Atletico the lead by converting from the penalty spot after Dede brought down Bruno Guimaraes in the box.

Uruguayan midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta equalized by heading in after Rafinha's lofted pass over the visitors' defence.

The result lifted Cruzeiro to third in the 20-team standings with 24 points from 14 matches while Atletico dropped to 19th with just 10 points.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras climbed to fifth after a 3-2 victory over Atletico Mineiro in Sao Paulo while Vasco da Gama rose to ninth by beating Gremio 1-0 here.
