Sports ministry institutes Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for athletes in distress

The sports ministry of India has announced the Welfare Fund for Sportspersons scheme for men and women sportspersons who excelled at national and international level and are in distress.

CHENNAI: The sports ministry of India has announced Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons scheme for men and women sportspersons who excelled at national and international level and are in distress.

A monthly pension of Rs 5,000 and a sum of Rs 5 lakh may be granted for athletes living in indigent circumstances. A sum not exceeding `10 lakh may be granted to an outstanding sportsperson for injuries sustained during training or while participating in competitions.

A sum not exceeding Rs 5 lakh may be provided to the families of the deceased. Not more than Rs 5 lakh may be provided for medical treatment. Coaches, support personnel, umpires and referees who have been associated with recognised national and international tournaments may be provided an amount of Rs 2 lakh.
