CHENNAI: In response to a news item published on Page 1 of our December 29 edition, Basketball Federation of India president K Govindaraj has clarified that the faction led by Poonam Mahajan is not “recognised” by the Indian Olympic Association.

He says if it does, the matter amounts to contempt of court, as Delhi HC has held his faction “legal”. The box item highlighted instances of different groups claiming to be the authorised federation in one sport. As acknowledged by Govindaraj, Mahajan’s half is “supported” by the IOA, which, does not “recognise” the half headed by him.

“The IOA has ignored FIBA’s letter and is not recognising the Govindaraj-led group. It has not recognised the Poonam Mahajan group as well but is supporting the Poonam Mahajan led group,” he wrote in a letter. The issue of factionalism in the body and dispute over who is authorised continues. The IOA has formed a three-member committee to resolve the issue.
