Sporting events in city likely to go on as per schedule despite Jallikattu protests

Though Chennai is under tension in the wake of Jallikattu protests, most of the sporting events scheduled to take place in the city are unlikely to get affected.

CHENNAI: Though Chennai is under tension in the wake of Jallikattu protests, most of the sporting events scheduled to take place in the city are unlikely to get affected. The Chennai Open Chess which is underway at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium will go on as schedule on Tuesday.


The city is also lined up to host Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament involving Kerala, Andhra, Hyderabad, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu starting on January 29 and sources in TNCA said as of now there is no threat to the matches. “So far nobody has raised any problem with it. Preparations to host the tournament is going on as usual,” TNCA joint-secretary RI Palani said. The scene is similar for the I-League match involving Chennai City and Aizawl FC on January 28.

MS Sharon Mary Cherian, a Schram Academy, Maduravoyal, student, won seven medals at the 29th South Zone Aquatic Championship organised by the Karnataka Swimming Association, affiliated to Swimming Federation of India and Sports Authority of Karnataka, in association with the Belgaum Swimmers Club at Belagavi, held from January 6 to 8. 


Her haul included 3 gold (400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle), 3 silver (400m Individual Medley, 100m free relay, 200m free relay) and a bronze (200m freestyle). She received a cash award of `75,000 at the Tamil Nadu Sports Authority swimming contest held for the Chief Minister’s Trophy on January 11.
