HYDERABAD: In view of the phenomenal growth of the areas under the jurisdiction of the Vijayawada- Guntur-Tenali- Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTUDA), Visakahaptnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) and Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) during the last two decades resulting in increased demand for transportation infrastructure, the State Government has constituted unified metropolitan transportation committees.
By a GO, the Municipal Administration Department announced formation of the committees to address problems caused by an increase in the number of personal vehicles, frequent congestion along all major roads, longer journey time, accidents and high pollution levels.
To overcome the increasing traffic hazards, various authorities have prepared traffic and transportation action plans for implementation in the areas of the three urban development authorities and their surroundings.
The unified metropolitan transport authorities need not confine themselves to only coordination among various Departments and agencies on matters relating to traffic and transportation but also to be able to integrate various modes of public transport like rail and bus in a compatible manner, and prepare a road map for the implementation of the comprehensive transportation plan in the three areas.
The committees will be headed by the principal secretary (municipal admn) who will act as chairman.
The members will include principal secretary (TR&B), vice-chairman and managing director of APSRTC, commissioner of transport, divisional railway managers and others.
