GRP puts photos of missing persons on portal

In a determined bid for faster identification of missing persons, the railway police have ensured uploading  photos of unidentified bodies on various web sites which include www.cidap.gov.in, http://missingperson.ap.nic.in and www.apstatepolice.org.

Instructions have been issued to seek identification through clothes and marks on the body. They hope that the ongoing CCTNS project of the ministry of home affairs will also help in connecting data about the missing persons with the data of persons found and bodies recovered by the police anywhere in India.

Stating that as many as 60 per cent of the total number of FIRs being registered by the railway police are cases of suspicious deaths, additional director-general of police (railways) VS Kaumudi said here on Wednesday that the railway police had ensured 100 percent uploading of photos of unidentified bodies on various portals.

The Government Railway Police have to attend to a large number of cases registered under Section 174 of Cr.PC as suspicious deaths including accidental deaths and suicides. After an initial investigation these cases turn out to be murder cases which are generally committed away from the railway premises but to hide the evidence and mislead investigation, bodies are left on the railway tracks.  Roughly, 60 per cent of all the FIRs at the GRP police stations are registered under Section 174 of CrPC. ‘‘Fixing the identity of the deceased is a big challenge to the railway police as the victims could be from any part of India.,’’ Kumudi added.
