In the sensational Narthana child harassment case, the district court here on Tuesday sentenced the mother of the girl O Chaitanaya and her paramour R Nagesh to five-years of rigorous imprisonment.

The couple had tortured the girl for revealing their illicit affair.

Nellore second additional incharge district judge EV Sadanandamurthy awarded punishment to Chaitanya and her paramour R Nagesh, on various charges including attempt to murder, illegal confinement and harassment of Narthana.

The judge ordered that both the accused pay a fine of `36,000 each and of the total fine amount paid, `70,000 be deposited in the name of Narthana, now under the care of ICDS after she was rescued from the clutches of her mother and her paramour.

Chaitanya who was working as a ZP school teacher, deserted her husband and was living with her daughter Narthana (then 5 years).

She met a private school correspondent Nagesh at Venkatachalam where her daughter was studying LKG.

The contact developed into a relationship.

Nagesh began to visit Chaitanya’s house frequently.

Narthana in all innocence, inadvertently told her friends about the frequent visit of their school correspondent to her home, which the children spread like wildfire.

Angered over the affair becoming public, Nagesh told Chaitanya to get rid of the girl, so that the affair could be continued in all secrecy.

The couple first took the child to the railway track near the house to kill her, but abandoned the plan when they saw some persons coming that way.

The couple who developed a grudge against the child subjected her to frequent harassments and torture including branding her with a hot iron rod.

They used to shut the doors of the house and put the TV on high volume to submerge the cries of the child, when physical beatings were on.

They confined the child in the house, locked it and went away.
