Family shocked by news from Oslo

News that prosecutors in Oslo have invoked child abuse laws that provide for jail terms of up to a year and a half has come as a shocker to the family of the Hyderabad couple, V Chandrasekhar and Anupama.

The couple were arrested by the Oslo police for “beating up” their seven-year-old son Sai Sriram. The police filed a charge sheet in a Oslo court stating that the boy bore injury marks on his body.

The fathers of Chandrasekhar and Anupama have written to Union minister for overseas Indian affairs Vayalar Ravi for assistance in the case, stating that the couple’s two children, Abhiram (2) and Sai Sriram (7), were crying for their food and refusing food. The children were left behind in their grandparents’ care when the family returned to Hyderabad for a visit last month.

According to V Sailender, Chandrasekhar’s nephew, Oslo police did not entertain pleas for the release of the couple by relatives who live in Norway.

He said that the couple had only tried to counsel Sai Sriram after he was found to have wet his pants in the school bus. The parents of Chandrasekhar and Anupama are aged 75 and are worried over what would happen to the couple. This apart, the couple’s two children are aged seven and two and they need parental help
