Chiru Meets Sonia, Pleads for Hyderabad as Union Territory

Even though the Congress high command is not showing any signs of considering the demand to make Hyderabad a Union Territory post-bifurcation, Union minister from Seemandhra K Chiranjeevi is not ready to give it up.

The actor-turned-minister on Saturday knocked on the door of his party boss Sonia Gandhi and once again pleaded with her to accord UT status to Hyderabad at least for 10 years, during which the city will be joint capital of both the proposed states. Though nobody knows Sonia’s response to his plea, Chiranjeevi later told mediapersons outside 10 Janpath that his party boss had lent him an ear.

Claiming that he had called on the AICC president on behalf of the Union Ministers from Seemandhra to make last-ditch efforts to realise their dream of making Hyderabad a UT with Assembly on the lines of Delhi post-bifurcation, the Union Minister exuded confidence that his boss would consider this demand positively.

“I am making all possible efforts to  persuade our party high command to accord UT status to Hyderabad in return of our support to the T-Bill. Our party leadership is taking steps to introduce the T-bill in the winter session of Parliament,” he said.

If UT status was accorded to Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, it would facilitate easy administration in the joint capital, he said.

According to him, he had also pleaded with Sonia to keep Bhadrachalam with Seemandhra. On Rayala Telangana proposal, he said, “People and politicos of Rayalaseema should decide it.”
