Manhandling of couple by SI: High Court orders probe

The High Court has directed the director-general of police to conduct an inquiry into alleged manhandling of a couple by the sub-inspector of Kothapatnam police station in Prakasam district.

Justice Ramesh Ranganathan gave the direction on Thursday while dealing with a petition filed by Gowtham Gandhi against the failure of the authorities to register a case against M Srinivasa Rao, SI of Kothapatnam, for assaulting him and  detaining him at the police station.

The petitioner said that he and his wife had sustained injuries when an RTC bus hit their motorcycle while they were retuning from the Kothapatnam beach on December 23, 2012. When he was questioning the bus crew, the SI reached the spot along with a constable, and scolded him and took him to the police station and subjected him to third-degree torture.

Superintendent of police K Raghuram Reddy, in his counter affidavit, denied the allegation.
