Police Sunday seized Rs 18 lakh from a car during a vehicle check in the town on the eve of DCCB elections.
Following the seizure, some television channels went to town claiming the car and cash belonged to former Congress MLA N Varadarajulu Reddy.
Dismissing the reports, police said the car belongs to one Ramakrishna, a retired official of DCCB and the vehicle was hired by one U Sivashankar.
Proddatur DSP Srinivasulu Reddy said that Sivashankar, who hails from Proddutur town, was taking the cash to his uncle U Mallikarjun, but failed to produce documents to support his claim.
Mallikarjun owns a petrol pump in Yerragudipadu village of Kamalapuram constituency and also runs other businesses. “Since the cash was unaccounted for, we seized it and handed it over to the Income Tax department for further probe,” DSP Srinivasulu Reddy said.
