Samaikyandhra Prajasanghala Joint Action Committee chairman Karem Sivaji and others staged a mahadharna at Indira Park here on Monday, demanding another 60 days’ time for debating the draft Telangana Bill in the state Assembly.
Several leaders from different political parties, including some ministers, visited the dharna camp and extended their support to the cause.
Ministers Ganta Srinivasa Rao and Erasu Pratap Reddy described the bill as anti-people and said that the time had come for intensifying the movement for keeping the state united. ‘’The debate on the draft bill has reached an important phase and the opposition to the bill should be intensified further,’’ Pratap Reddy said, asserting that the bill would not benefit any region of the state.
Rao said that when they had approached the Supreme Court against Union Cabinet’s decision on bifurcation, the court said it was premature to approach it.
Another minister, Sake Sailajanath, said that bifurcation of the state would be detrimental to the interests of Dalits, Adivasis, minorities and the poor at large.
Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy, TDP MPs Sujana Chowdary and K Narayana Rao, and MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, APNGO president P Ashok Babu and Visalandhra Mahasabha president N Chakravarti also spoke.
All the leaders extended their support to Samaikyandhra Students JAC which was staging a dharna at another camp at Dharna Chowk.
Later, all the participants went in a procession to lay siege to the Assembly but were detained and released in the evening.
