RAJAHMUNDRY/ELURU: Elections to the posts of mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and municipal chairmen were conducted for 17 municipalities and two municipal corporations in the twin Godavari districts Thursday.

Rajahmundry and Eluru municipal corporations have Telugu Desam Party women mayors. While Pantham Rajani Sesha Sai was elected mayor of Rajahmundry, SK Noorjahan was elected unopposed Eluru mayor.

The oath taking ceremony of corporators-elect was held in the well decorated Krovvidi Lingaraju Municipal Council Hall in Rajahmundry Thursday.

Special officer and East Godavari collector Neetu Prasad  administered oath to all the 50 corporators which took about an hour. Municipal commissioner V Ravindra called out the names of the corporators-elect.

Later, elections to mayor and deputy mayor posts were conducted wherein the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) bagged all the local bodies. Pantham Rajani Sesha Sai and Vasireddy Rambabu were elected  mayor and deputy mayor unanimously.

MP Maganti Murali Mohan, Rajahmundry Rural MLA and TDP state general secretary Gorantla Buchaiah Choudary, Rajahmundry Urban MLA Akula Satyanarayana, MLC Adireddy Appa Rao, local channel managing director and Sesha Sai’s husband Pantham Kondala Rao and many others were present.

It’s Hat-trick for TD

The TDP has achieved hat-trick by capturing the mayor and the deputy mayor posts of Rajahmundry. In the three elections conducted to the MCR, the coveted mayor post was bagged twice by women. The TDP secured majority in all the elections.

In the first two councils, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had no representation. In the present third council the BJP and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) opened their accounts by winning one seat each.

In West Godavari district, the TDP made a clean sweep in the elections to civic chief posts. TDP candidate SK Noorjahan was elected Eluru mayor.

In the 50-member council, the TDP has 40 members. Chode Venkataratnam was declared elected deputy mayor.

Earlier, special officer and district collector Siddharth Jain administered oath to the 50 elected corporators. Since all the corporators agreed on Noorjahan’s candidature and there was no second nomination for the mayor post, the collector announced that Noorjahan was elected mayor.
