RAJAHMUNDRY: As many as 50 girl students of the Social Welfare Residential School located at Sivakodu village in Razole mandal were admitted to the government hospital at Razole after they complained of diarrhoea Wednesday.

Glucose was administered to 23 students at the hospital and the rest were sent back to the hostel after minor treatment. Contaminated water supplied to the students and unhygienic conditions at the schools are said to be the reason behind the sickness. Nearly 406 girls are studying at the school.

The school management is said to have been diverting the used water into a pit dug at the coconut orchard. The Rural Water Supply (RWS) Department supplies 30,000 litres water per day to the school, against the stipulated 60,000 litres, which is not sufficient to fill even one water sump. According to Social Welfare Residential Schools district convenor Surya Rao, the students are stable and out of danger.

Deputy chief minister N  Chinarajappa, Razole MLA Gollapalli Surya Rao and additional joint collector D Markandeyulu rushed to Sivakodu village.
