HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly Thursday urged the central government to provide resources to establish a world-class capital city of the state around Vijayawada.
"As the Council of Ministers decided that integrated and equitable development can be best served by locating the capital city at a central place around Vijayawada, the assembly requests the government of India to provide resources required for the establishment of a world-class capital city for Andhra Pradesh," said a resolution moved by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
It requested the government to allocate 20 TMC of water for the new capital.
"The assembly resolves to request the government of India to provide necessary financial and policy support for faster and equitable development of the state," the resolution said.
Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a partner in the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre, called for taking all measures to create a level-playing field for Andhra Pradesh by compensating for the disequilibrium created by the bifurcation of the state.
"The assembly resolves to request the government of India that all provisions of Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, relating to the progress and development of the state and the assurances given to parliament by then prime minister shall be implemented in letter and spirit at the earliest to enable us to build a new Andhra Pradesh," the resolution added.
The assembly also urged the Centre to complete the Polavaram irrigation project within four years.
Earlier, the chief minister in his speech said the central government should fulfill the commitments given on special status for the state, special development package for three districts of north Andhra and four districts of Rayalaseema regions, and special incentives for the industry.
The resolution also wanted the NDA government at the Centre to rectify the anomaly in allocating the number of seats to the Andhra Pradesh legislative council and sought enhancement of the number of seats to 58 in accordance with the constitutional provisions.
