Capital Construction to Begin on Banks of River Krishna Near Amaravathi

VIJAYAWADA: The construction of the new capital city of Andhra Pradesh may begin on the banks of river Krishna around the historic Amaravathi town and proceed on either side of the river, eventually encircling Vijayawada.

TDP sources said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on developing a river front capital and wants to have key government offices near Amaravathi on either side of the river Krishna.

“The Chief Minister wants to begin works for the construction of the capital near Amaravathi. Vaastu pandits are also said to have suggested the same to him. He wants to develop the city on both sides of the river in Guntur and Krishna districts,” a senior TDP leader told Express. Interestingly, Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana had hinted at the same recently when he disclosed that the State government was planning a 184-km long outer ring road (ORR) connecting Vijayawada city , Guntur and even Tenali.

Sources said the Chief Minister’s idea was to build at least three bridges across the river Krishna above the Prakasam barrage to link national highways passing through Vijayawada and Guntur.

It is learnt that Naidu is also contemplating the development of an island in the river near Amaravathi as a tourist attraction besides linking Amaravathi town with Kanchikacherla in Krishna district. As part of the plan, several offices will be set up along the proposed outer ring road which covers Mylavaram and Nuzvid areas. “It seems development of the capital on either side of the Krishna river will help the historic Amaravathi regain its past glory, and look like modern Patna, the capital of Bihar,” said Prof GV Chalam, Dean of College Development Commitee, Acharya Nagarjuna University. He opined that capital around Vijayawada may mean areas that fall within 50 km radius of the city.

Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas has already announced that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be set up near Mangalagiri between Vijayawada and Guntur. Director of General Police (DGP) office and other police offices will also be set up at Mangalagiri. This would help connect both Vijayawada and Guntur cities and bring them much closer.
