Bus Shelter Shortage in City a Mighty Problem

VIJAYAWADA: Though the requirement for bus shelters in the city has doubled in the recent days and is going to increase further, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) does not appear to be giving the issue a serious thought.

As the city plays a crucial role as a part of the capital region, there is a great need to develop bus shelters in the city. At present, there are 104 bus shelters in the city as against the total 478 bus stops. More than 40 bus shelters on the BRTS corridor, which have been constructed through PPP mode and also with donations from NGOs.

Adding to that, more than 40 of the 104 bus shelters in the city are in a dilapidated condition. In the city, many locations like Hotel Fortune Murali Park, Benz Circle, NTR Circle, Seetarampuram, Besant Road and others have no bus shelters. Scores of buses ply on these routes on a daily basis. But in the absence of bus shelters, hundreds of passengers are facing severe hardships and are forced to wait in the middle of the busy roads to catch buses to their destination.
