Centre releases Rs 555 crore for Telangana, Rs 877 crore for Andhra under AMRUT scheme

HYDERABAD: Union ministry of urban development on Wednesday approved an investment of Rs 555 crore for Telangana and Rs 877 crore for Andhra Pradesh for providing basic amenities in urban areas under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

The Centre has approved Rs 4,404 crore investment to eight states and Union Territories on Wednesday, of which Telangana got Rs 555 crore and AP Rs 877 crore.

Of the investments approved for this financial year, the Central assistance to be provided will be Rs 277 crore to Telangana and Rs 352 crore to AP. The funds will be utilised in augmenting water supply, sewerage networks, drainage, urban transport and public and green spaces in urban areas in the current financial year. An inter-ministerial apex committee chaired by Rajiv Gauba, Union urban development ministry secretary, approved the State Level Annual Action Plans (SAAP) of the states. Earlier, in the current financial year, the ministry of urban development approved total investments of Rs 19,213 crore under AMRUT.

Under Atal Mission which was launched in June, the total investment approved in basic infrastructure in urban areas in 500 mission cities stood at Rs 44,401 crore, with a total Central assistance commitment of Rs  20,634 crore.

Under AMRUT, ensuring water supply connections to all the urban households besides water supply at 135 litres per capita per day is accorded top priority followed by improving sewerage networks, storm water drains and urban transport with focus on non-motorised transport. Every mission city is required to provide/ develop at least one park each year.

Under AMRUT, Central assistance is provided to the tune of 50 per cent of the project cost, if the population of mission cities is less than 10 lakh each and one third of project cost if the population is more than 10 lakh each.
