New app developed to help keep Vizag clean

With a sharp focus on solid waste management, the GVMC is preparing itself for the upcoming ‘Swacch Survey’.

VISAKHAPATNAM : With a sharp focus on solid waste management, the GVMC is preparing itself for the upcoming ‘Swacch Survey’. In the last survey, Vizag was adjudged the fifth cleanest city in the country. The GVMC now wants the citizens to make use of the recently launched ‘Swachhata’ app by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) to register complaints pertaining to sanitation issues.

“Through the Swachhata app, it will be easy to address the complaints. One can click to register complaints. There will be immediate response,” GVMC commissioner M Hari Narayanan told the media here on Wednesday.

Giving more details about the app, the civic chief said once a complaint is registered, the sanitary inspector concerned would receive an alert. The sanitation officials have to address the issues in a given time frame. “We have already reviewed the app and the citizen can opt for Telugu language to register complaints,” he said. On waste management, Hari Narayanan said awareness campaigns would be undertaken.

There will be zone-wise designated areas (survey number) for dumping waste for which further notifications will be issued. “Tenders have been called for organic waste converters which will prepare compost from wastes. The converters will be set up at rythu bazaars and Poorna Market. The project will be launched in some colonies too on a pilot basis and after Sankranti, the converters will be set up in more colonies,” he said.

The GVMC commissioner said that last year the civic body had to compete with just 78 cities, but now around 500 cities would be taking part in Swacch survey which would begin on January 4.
