Six students hurt as boiler goes off at science expo in Vizag

Six students were injured when a model of a power plant steam boiler went off at the science exhibition organised as a part of the ongoing workshop.

VISAKHAPATNAM :  Six students were injured when a model of a power plant steam boiler went off at the science exhibition organised as a part of the ongoing workshop at Sai Ganapathi Polytechnic and Engineering College at Bidijala of Anandapuram mandal on Wednesday. 

Among the six, the condition of two is said to be critical. The incident occurred at 1 pm, when boiler blasted reportedly due to excess pressure. According to sources, one valve in the steam pipeline did not function properly, leading to building up of pressure in the boiler which burst. 

Final year student Srinivas, who sustained 30 per cent burns, was undergoing treatment in the ICU, while Satya Sai Prasad, with 50 per cent burns, was kept on ventilator support. Both were admitted to a hospital in Arilova. 

The rest four, who received minor injuries, have been discharged from the hospital. The kin of the victims are questioning the quality of the material used to build the model.
