Time’s up! VMC won’t accept banned notes now

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation’s (VMC) decision to accept scrapped `500 notes for collecting water tax until December 15, has helped the civic body rake in `27.36 lakh.


VMC Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) G Subba Rao said the announcement on the demonetisation of `500 and `1000 notes came as a shot in the arm for the civic body. It used the grace period given by the Centre to make taxpayers fall in line. A total of `27,36,231 collected from 1,771 assessments in the city, of which `2,41,251 was earned through arrears. As on date, the civic body collected `16.70 crore water tax as against the demand of `29.90 crore, he said.


On the other, APSPDCL chief engineer Raja Bapaiah told Express demonetisation had triggered the collection of `3.5 crore arrears each from Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts.
