Currency exchange gang attacks rivals, flees with `17 lakh

A currency exchange gang of Gajuwaka attacked their rival gang from Munagapaka in a cash dispute.

VISAKHAPATNAM: A currency exchange gang of Gajuwaka attacked their rival gang from Munagapaka in a cash dispute. After the attack, the Gajuwaka gang  fled with `17 lakh cash, all in the new currency notes.  Though the incident occurred around 20 days ago, it came to light after the Gajuwaka police registered a case after instructions from City police commissioner T Yoganand.

According to sources, the Gajuwaka and  Munagapaka gangs exchanged currency notes a few times. The Gajuwaka gang led by a local rowdy-sheeter exchanged old currency notes of `40,000 and took new currency from the Munagakapaka gang, taking 30 per cent commission.  Again the Gajuwaka gang allegedly wanted to exchange `20 lakh in old currency. After the Munagapaka gang came for the exchange, the Gajuwaka gang had allegedly beat them up and fled with the cash of `17 lakh in new currency.
After the attack came to light, a case was registered at Gajuwaka police station.
The Gajuwaka police reportedly took seven persons into custody. Further investigation is on.
