14-year-old’s organs give new life to five in Vijaywada

In a noble gesture, the parents of a 14-year-old boy who was declared brain-dead following a head injury, donated his organs to five people in need of transplants.

VIJAYAWADA: In a noble gesture, the parents of a 14-year-old boy who was declared brain-dead following a head injury, donated his organs  to five people in need of transplants.

Through Jeevandan programme, the vital organs of the boy were harvested at a hospital in the city on Wednesday to give a new lease of life to five patients in Vijayawada and Hyderabad.

V Roop Kumar, a class VIII student accidentally fell down in the school while he was playing with other children on October 24 and suffered serious head injury.

Even though he was admitted to a private hospital immediately, his condition steadily deteriorated. The boy was shifted to Government General Hospital (GGH) where a team of doctors examining his condition declared him brain-dead on Monday night.

Doctors at GGH told the boy’s parents V Sivaram Krishna and V Sunitha that they could donate their son’s organs to help others. The child’s kidneys were shifted to city-based Aayush and Sunrise Hospitals, while the liver was shifted to Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. The eyes were donated to a a patient at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital.

The city police provided a green corridor for the speedy transport of the organs. The organs were retrieved in one hour and in the next 18 minutes, liver reached the Gannavaram airport from where it was taken to Hyderabad in a special chopper arranged by the respective hospitals.
