Family stages protest over infant's death; duty doctor suspended

GUNTUR: Mild tension prevailed on the premises of the Government General Hospital (GGH) with relatives of the infant, who died while undergoing treatment, staging a protest blaming the negligence on part of the doctors only led to the tragedy. This was the same baby which was declared dead by the hospital doctors on Tuesday but was later discovered to be alive.

Taking serious note of the issue, GGH officials suspended duty doctor Indrani, as per the instructions of the Director of Medical Education (DME).

J Bhavani, a native of Guntur city, was admitted to the GGH who gave birth to a male child on Tuesday morning. However, the doctors declared the infant dead citing that the baby’s heart was not functioning and mentioned it as intrauterine death and also issued a death certificate.

With the doctors declaring the baby dead and also issuing the out pass for taking away the infant, the saddened father Jagannatham along with some of his relatives boarding an auto outside the hospital observed the infant body’s movements and rushed back him the hospital. Later, the doctors admitted the baby to the ICU and put him on ventilator.

However, the boy died while undergoing treatment on Wednesday and the relatives alleged that sheer negligence on part of the doctors only led to the death of the infant and staged a protest demanding action against the erratic staff.

Meanwhile, with the health minister Kamineni Srinivas expressing ire over the hospital authorities for declaring the infant dead without proper examination sought a report.

An official of the GGH on the condition of anonymity admitted that the staff attended to the infant had committed  a blunder by making the death declaration citing it as Intrauterine death and also issuing the death certificate.

“Of course, the doctors at the labour room might not find any movements by the baby. But, instead of making a hasty declaration over the death of the infant, the doctors are supposed to refer the case to the pediatric department, who in turn will make proper examination and take the necessary steps accordingly,” the official said. It is learnt apart from the duty doctor Indira, a senior resident, a PG student and the staff nurse, who attended to the mother and infant, are likely to face action for the lapses.
