GUNTUR: Kapu Sangham activists held a candlelight vigil at the statue of freedom fighter Kanneganti Hanumanthu in the city on Sunday night demanding BC status for the community.
They raised slogans against the Telugu Desam government for its failure to fulfil the election promise of providing BC status to Kapus even after three years of rule.
Speaking on the occasion, Kapu Joint Action Committee leader Kilari Venkata Rosaiah alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was trying to deceive the community by dilly dallying on the BC reservation issue.
He also lashed out at the government for preventing Kapu patriarch Mudragada Padmanabham from taking out ‘Chalo Amaravati Padayatra’ from Kirlampudi by using police force. Kapu leaders Adapa Kasi Viswanadham, Immidisetty Venkateswara Rao, Uppu Rattaiah, Bandi Durga Rao and others participated in the candlelight vigil.
‘Jala Deeksha’ in Vasishta Godavari
Kapu activists staged ‘Jala Deeksha’ in Vasishta Godavari river at Koderu ghat in Achanta mandal of West Godavari district on Sunday demanding BC status.
Speaking on the occasion, Kapu Association district president Chinamilli Venkatrayudu lashed out at the Telugu Desam government for preventing Mudragada Padmanabham from taking out ‘Chalo Amaravati Padayatra’.
Kapu activists would organise ‘Chalo Kirlampudi’ from all the Assembly constituencies in the district extending their support to Mudragada’s agitation, he said.
He flayed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for his ‘indifference’ to their demand for inclusion of Kapus in the list of Backward Classes.
