VISAKHAPATNAM: A number of traffic signals in the city have not been working for the last 48 hours at major junctions here, resulting in anarchy. Technical snags and absence of operator are reasons cited by the police.

Only 40 junctions out of 94 have signal lights. The signal lights in Vizag are not integrated or made automatic but are enabled by the traffic cop every day.

The signal lights at most of the junctions fail to work here on weekends.

Important junctions on the National Highway-16 passing through the city like Isukathota, Maddilapalem, Satyam junction, Gurdwara, Akkayyapalem, RTC complex junction and Thatichetlapalem have not been  functioning. Traffic police man the major junctions and rest of the areas have been left to their fate. The situation turns worse at the peak hours.

Sources said that there were some issues with contractor of the signal lights, the civic body and the police department, leading to the present situation.

The contract agency of Hyderabad entered into the tripartite agreement to provide CCTV cameras as well as traffic signal lights. Sources said that at present the contractor is not available. On the issue, ADCP (Traffic) K Mahendra Patrudu said that a technical snag was the issue.

However, he said that a few junctions on the stretch between Hanumanthuwaka- Thatichetlapalem have not been working and they would sort it out immediately.
