Vijayawada all set for first Women’s Parliament

SRIKAKULAM: The most prestigious event taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government, National Women’s Parliament is all set to take off on a grand note. Keynote speakers and guests have started arriving in the city from Thursday onwards. State officials and staff were busy in handling the accommodation and other arrangements.

The three-day conclave is scheduled to begin on Friday in Amaravati. The officials are expecting over 12,000 delegates to participate in the event and 40-odd teams have been formed under the supervision of various government departments. Along with women Parliamentarians in the country, renowned women personalities from countries like the US, Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are expected to take part.

Krishna district Collector Babu A, said elaborate arrangements have been made at the venue to ensure all comforts to the visitors. “We are taking all measures to ensure both safety and comfort for all the participants and visitors to the meet. Breakfast and lunch to the delegates would be served on the main dais, to prevent any hassles. The venue has been provided free WiFi access. Over 400 buses and 300 cars have been arranged to cater to the transport needs of the guests,” he added.

Apart from the tight security arrangements, the officials have also deployed over 1,200 sanitation workers to maintain hygiene and clean environment at the venue. A temporary 20-bed hospital at the venue with a team of expert doctors has been set up.

The delegates have been provided accommodation at more than 100 different places in Vijayawada and surrounding areas. Over 8,000 students have been accommodated in over 200 schools and colleges in the city and surrounding areas. Registrations for students and outsiders would begin between 8 and 9 am at the venue. District Educational Officers have instructed schools and colleges to issue holidays from Thursday.

Right from the morning hours of Thursday, guests and participants had been arriving in the city. Eminent personality Dalai Lama, chief guest of the event, reached the city on Thursday morning. Film actress Manisha Koirala, acid attack mission crusader Laxmi, chess player Koneru Humpy and parliamentarians have reached the city. All flights coming to Gannavaram Airport are completely filled with passengers.
