TIRUPATI: Vigilance staff frisking pilgrims at the foot of the Tirumala Hill, atop with the famous Venkateshwara temple is located, are used to devotees carrying odd things to offer to the deity. On Monday, they were startled by the haul of oddities they found on pilgrims.

One man, a construction worker, was detained at the Alipiri checkpost with 100 gm of marijuana. Seven others were arrested for transporting other kinds of contraband: 11 kilos of dried fish, four full and three quarter bottles of liquor and one full bottle of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL).

The chief of vigilance of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which administers the temple, A Ravi Krishna said even fish are banned on the strictly vegetarian hill shrine.
