Parivarthana helps reform prisoners

The Parivarthana programme taken up by the Prisons Department has proved to be a boon to prisoners to reform themselves and lead a dignified life after their release from jail.

ELURU: The Parivarthana programme taken up by the Prisons Department has proved to be a boon to prisoners to reform themselves and lead a dignified life after their release from jail. In West Godavari, Parivarthana Centres have come up at the district jail in Eluru and sub-jails in Tanuku, Tadepalligudem, Narsapuram, Bhimavaram and Chintalapudi.

The Prisons Department has introduced the concept to give freedom to prisoners besides counselling them to reform themselves. Speaking to TNIE, District Jail Superintendent B Chandra Sekhar said: “Parivarthana Kendra (transformation centre) is a good concept and it helps make prisoners feel that they are not in jail. A bakery unit will be set up in the district jail soon to enable prisoners to earn money by working in it. A phenol manufacturing unit will also be set up in the district jail.”

Mentioning other welfare initiatives, he said: “We have provided phone facility to prisoners to talk to their family members. Each prisoner can talk to his family members over the phone for 30 minutes twice a week. The reforms are meant to transform the prisoners completely.”
