Andhra government transfers erring Kurnool hospital chief, RMO

KURNOOL: The New Indian Express campaign has made the juggernaut of the government move, at last. Holding superintendent of Kurnool General Hospital Dr J Veeraswamy responsible for power failure at the hospital for an entire night recently during which as many as 20 patients died, the government has transferred him to the paediatric division.The government also relieved Resident Medical Officer D Y Srinvasulu of his responsibilities, as it is believed that he too was responsible for the disaster.

Dr P Chandrasekhar has been appointed as in-charge superintendent of the hospital. Following series of exposes by Express on how the power went off in the hospital for the entire night recently, the government conducted an enquiry into the matter.  The orders of transfer were issued by the AP Director of Medical Education Dr N Subba Rao.

Dr Veeraswami was supposed to retire on May 31 this year, but he got an extension of three years after the government raised the retirement age limit by three years. The Director of Medical Examination and Minister for Health visited the Kurnool General Hospital separately and inspected the records and enquired about the irregularities that have taken place at the hospital. 

With no option left, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas took strong action against the Superintendent. Veeraswami has been posted as Professor of Pediatric Surgery.The government has issued orders to appoint Dr P Chandra Sekhar (Professor of Cardiology in the same hospital) as In-Charge Superintendent of the hospital. He will discharge duties as new Superintendent at Kurnool General Hospital besides monitoring his department.

What’s the action
Superintendent Dr J Veeraswamy has been posted as Professor of Pediatric Surgery. The government repatriated the services of Civil Surgeon and RMO Dr Y Srinivasulu to parent department and ordered him to report before the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Vijayawada, for further posting
