Vijayawada police to honour 120 women achievers

They are recognised for cementing their position in their fields, being a source of inspiration for others

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada city police set to felicitate 120 women achievers, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, who struggled hard to lead their livelihood and stood as role models for many other women in the society. The department organised an interactive session with the women achievers, on Tuesday, and would felicitate them on Wednesday. Each police station has selected five women achievers in their region.

Koranti Maria Rani, a 38-year-old women who is a resident of Vijayawada, has never dreamt that she would lead a life and be a women achiever after the sudden death of her husband in 2008. In fact, the mother of three chose to end her life, but soon realised that her children would become orphans and gathered strength and started new life as a vegetable vendor in a local rythu bazaar in the city.
Now after almost nine years, her eldest daughter is doing Nursing, another daughter is studying Intermediate first year and her son too is studying Intermediate first year at Siddhartha College. She has been selected for the women achievers award by the city police for the year 2017. She was in tears after recollecting her life after the death of her husband.

Similar to the case of Maria Rani, Kodali Koteswaramma, who is in her mid-30s lost her husband 11 years ago in a road accident. Her dreams were shattered and she had no interest to live. Being a Class X dropout, she didn’t know how to raise her two children. She joined a private hospital as a medical helper and then as a medical staff. Although she started working, she made up her mind to resume studies and sat for Class X exams when she was 30. Now, she is doing undergraduation in distance mode, while her son is doing B Tech and her daughter is studying law. “There are many unexpected twists and turns in my life and this felicitation is a sweet surprise to me. I chose to live, fight and succeed when life pushed me into the hard times. That is why I am here.” said K Koteswaramma.

Addressing the gathering, Joint Commissioner of Police, Hari Kumar said that the Vijayawada police was going to project the strengths of women achievers to inspire the public.
“Utilising their inborn traits of hard work and courage, women can channel their positive energy into entrepreneurial activities successfully. The department always supports such women achievers and stands by them,” he said. A total of 120 women achievers would be felicitated with a shawl and memento at the police stations that selected the women.
