VISAKHAPATNAM :  With many incidents of newborn girls being abandoned by parents being reported in the city of late, the District Women and Child Development Agency is gearing up to organise more awareness programmes for women on various issues.

To begin with, a two-day session that began at Andhra University on Friday had experts answering to the queries of women related to the legal aspects of various problems being faced by the fairer sex in the society.

“Awareness on women-related laws is the need the hour as many women are still suffering in silence, but never lodge complaints even as their rights are violated. Fights over trivial issues are leading to divorce, domestic violence and dowry and sexual harassment still remain the leading cases registered with the National Commission for Women (NCW),” said Nannapaneni Rajakumari, chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Women’s Commission. During the programme, women from various backgrounds interacted with the resource persons to clear their doubts on several laws.

“Five cases wherein the children were abandoned by the parents have been reported from the city this month. The only way to sensitise people is to create awareness by organising interactive sessions and training programmes,” she said.

Visakhapatnam joint collector Srijana G and  Chaitanya Sravanti chairperson Shirin Rehman spoke on the importance of self-help groups. District Women and Child Development Agency project director Chinmayi Devi was also present on the occasion.
