Prisoner dies in Andhra jail, kin cry foul

A 40-year-old remand prisoner died under suspicious circumstances at Narsipatnam Sub-Jail late Saturday night.

VISAKHAPATNAM: A 40-year-old remand prisoner died under suspicious circumstances at Narsipatnam Sub-Jail late Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as A Ramakrishna (40), a native of Pedamakavaram village of Koyyuru mandal in Visakhapatnam Agency.

According to sources, Ramakrishna was nabbed by the police after being found selling country liquor in Visakhapatnam Agency and was remanded by the court.

The death of the prisoner sparked protests from the relatives and family members, who staged a dharna in front of the sub-jail and also at the excise police station on Sunday morning.

The family members alleged that police had beaten Ramakrishna mercilessly, which led ing to his death in the sub-jail.

However, the police officials claimed that Ramakrishna died of ill-health.

The police have registered a case and investigation is on. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
