V-P to inaugurate Yanam People’s Fest on January 6

Fest aimed at protecting heritage and tap tourism potential of this ex- French colony

YANAM : Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu agreed to visit Yanam on January 6 to inaugurate the three-day Yanam People’s Festival, an annual grand show marked by a cultural extravaganza commemorating Yanam, a former French colony surrounded by the East Godavari district. After meeting the Vice-President in Delhi, Puducherry Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao informed the media about Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to Yanam. Malladi also met Tourism Secretary Rashmi Verma and requested her to release funds for the construction of cultural centres at Ariankuppam in Puducherry and Gopal Nagar in Yanam at a cost of ` 28 crore. 

This year, the 16th Yanam People’s Festival is being held from January 6 to 8 at the GMC Balayogi Grounds in Yanam. Organised by Puducherry Tourism Department in association with the local governing bodies in Yanam, the programmes at the festival include cultural activities performed by troupes from various parts of the country. Meanwhile, as part of World Fishermen Day celebrations, essay writing competition, swimming and volleyball competitions were held at MGG BH School and GMC Balayogi Stadium.
