Harassed lady doctor attempts suicide while on duty

A lady doctor attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills at the government headquarters hospital here Wednesday upset with alleged harassment by hospital superintendent.

ELURU: A lady doctor attempted suicide by consuming sleeping pills at the government headquarters hospital here Wednesday upset with alleged harassment by hospital superintendent. The incident came to light late in the night. According to information, Dr. Vijaya Nirmala, government doctor at the Eluru headquarters hospital, consumed 30 sleeping pills while she was on duty.  After sometime, she fell unconscious. 

It is alleged that hospital superintendent AVR Mohan had been harassing her for the last two months. She joined the Eluru Government hospital two years back and has 12 years experience as a doctor and came to Eluru from Vijayawada to work. On Tuesday,  the Superintendent allegedly scolded her by calling her to his chambers in the presence of other doctors and staff. 

A humiliated Dr Vijaya Nirmala later narrated the incident to her mother Varalakahmi and brother. Later, she reported for duty as usual and after sometime on Wednesday afternoon, consumed the sleeping pills. She was on duty at that time. Her condition is said to be critical. However, hospital staff have been tight-lipped over the incident. The police haven’t yet registered any case. It is likely that the family of the doctor may file a complaint. The superintendent could not be reached for comment.
