VIJAYAWADA/GUNTUR: A 21-year-old pregnant woman travelling from Chennai to Gorakhpur in Raptisagar Superfast Express delivered a baby girl on the running train on Wednesday morning. The train made an emergency halt at Tenali railway station and the newborn baby along with her mother was shifted to the Government Hospital there.

Rekha, who was returning to her native village near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh along with her mother-in-law and another relative, developed labour pains when the train left Chirala railway station in Prakasam district.

With help of other women travelling on the train, she delivered a baby girl. The passengers alerted the ticket checker and the railway authorities were informed. The train made an emergency halt at Tenali railway station in Guntur district, where it has no stop otherwise. By the time the train reached the station, a 108 emergency vehicle was kept ready. Both Rekha and her newborn were shifted to Government Hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable and safe.
